Speed reduction plans for Herne Bay

Auckland Transport media release

24 November 2016

Speed reduction plans for Herne Bay

Traffic speeds in Herne Bay will be reduced as a result of a plan announced by Auckland Transport. AT is seeking feedback on the Herne Bay walking and cycling improvements which will benefit local people by creating an environment with quieter streets and fewer cars.

The proposal includes traffic calming measures in Herne Bay north of Jervois Rd. The traffic calming measures comprise raised tables and will be on intersections and on the mid-block of streets running north-south.

The improvements will include planting to further beautify what is already a green, leafy suburb.

The objective of this project is to reduce traffic speeds, improve local amenity and make it easier to cycle and walk throughout this area.

Auckland Transport has been working with the local community to develop this project says Kathryn King, AT’s Cycling, Walking and Safety manager.

“A lot of motorists use this area as a ‘rat-run’ to get on the Northern Motorway at Curran St so these traffic calming measures will also assist to reduce traffic volumes,” she says.

“This project will beautify the area with roadside planting and make it safer to walk or cycle to local shops, beaches, parks and schools.

“Herne Bay is such a beautiful place to get around on foot or bike. This project is a result of our own analysis of speeds and traffic volumes as well as listening to the needs of local people.”

Feedback is open until 18 December.
