Please note: There is a community meeting at Churchill Park at 1pm. Make sure you are sun smart as the area is very exposed.
Emergency Access Road
Route
The Kaikoura Emergency Access Route (Inland Route)
has been re-assessed.
The NZDF convoy carrying supplies
and essential services to Kaikoura is on its
way.
People’s safety remains our top priority. Thanks
to everyone for your patience.
Free bus service
The
FREE bus service started yesterday.
We encourage everyone
to use this great system, because it helps everyone save
fuel.
The four different routes all start from New World
supermarket, which is acting as a makeshift bus
interchange.
One 23-seater shuttle is circulating between
the New World bus interchange and the central business
district. A 12-seater van will be used to run the other
three routes; the Northern, Inland and Southern routes.
These routes cover more urban and rural areas, including
South Bay, Peketa, and Mangamaunu.
All buses are
operating on a “hail and ride” system, which means
passengers can wave it down.
The Circulating Shuttle runs
every half hour from 9am until 6pm.
See our Facebook page
for more information.
Water:
Please do not use and
flush toilets, wherever you are in the district. The sewage
system is not working.
BOIL ALL DRINKING WATER FROM TAPS,
NO MATTER WHERE IT HAS COME FROM. This includes water used
for food preparation (washing and peeling vegetables or
fruit), and for cleaning your teeth.
Only use unscented
bleach to sanitise drinking water. Lemon scented can only be
used for cleaning and disinfecting purposes.
Wash or
sanitise your hands often. If you have no water, use hand
sanitiser regularly. Hand sanitiser is available free from
the hospital.
Register for departure from
Kaikoura
Although the road is currently closed, Civil
Defence is accepting registrations from people with rugged
4WD vehicles and Class 1 rigid trucks who wish to leave
Kaikoura on a one way convoy, and not return before the road
is fully reopened.
There is no date yet when convoys may
begin.
To register please phone 03 319 5026.
Assisted
evacuations
For tourists and residents who need
assistance to leave (ie do not have rugged 4WD vehicles and
Class 1 rigid trucks) we are looking into this. For now we
will take registrations at the Kaikoura council
building.
Further evacuations by the military are only
for emergency/welfare
needs.
