Queensgate Shopping Centre – Update 21 November 2016
Ahead of remediation work to be carried out on the structure of one of the carpark buildings at Queensgate Shopping Centre, and as a safety precaution, the footpath and road on the corners of Waterloo Road and Bloomfield Terrace has been closed by the Hutt City Council. The closure will take effect immediately.
As previously reported consultant engineers Beca have advised that they have observed some damage to the structure of one of the carpark buildings. They have advised that the carpark is not in danger of collapse but that should a significant aftershock occur then the affected structure may be compromised further.
The engineers have recommended that structural strengthening be undertaken to this section of the carpark and this work has been ordered with urgency. Until this work is completed a portion of Queensgate Shopping Centre will remain closed along with the partial footpath and road closures.
Centre management remain confident that the Centre will progressively reopen later this week but re-emphasise that public safety is the primary concern and that they will continue to take a rigorous approach to allowing access to the areas that have been cleared by the engineers and advised to the local authority.
