Controlled access of the inland road (Kaikoura Emergency Access Road)
The Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management Group are arranging access for residents and essential vehicles to the
inland Kaikoura Emergency Access Road (State Highway 70).
At this stage access is only available from the Waiau end.
Access Conditions:
Cancellations or changes to this procedure could occur due to:
• Weather
• Geotechnical Hazards (eg landslides or aftershocks)
• Blockage due to breakdown
There will be no other civilian movements on this route regardless of permits that may have already been issued.
The road is only open on a controlled access basis to:
• Residents of the inland route
• New Zealand Defence Force
• Road and power repair contractors
Vehicle requirements:
• 4 Wheel drive vehicles only
• Heavy vehicles up to Class 1
• No Towing
