NZ Post flies mail and parcels into Kaikoura
New Zealand Post has sent two flights into Kaikoura today taking 1800 kgs of mail and courier parcels into the
earthquake-struck town.
The mail and parcels for Kaikoura residents had been building up in Christchurch and Blenheim since Monday’s quake when
road access to the town was cut off.
“It’ll take a couple of days to get the items sorted and delivered, but we expect it’ll be a welcome sign that some
services are starting to return,” says Mark Stewart, Chief Operating Officer.
“The special flight into Kaikoura this morning also provided an opportunity for our local contracts manager to get on
the ground and touch base with our contractors and offer our support,” says Mark Stewart.
“We’ll be using the inland road once it reopens to get more mail, parcels and other supplies into Kaikoura, but it will
take while for deliveries to settle into a regular pattern.”
Following the quake, New Zealand Post and CourierPost are using the SH1 diversion through Lewis Pass to transport mail
and parcels from Picton and Blenheim through to Christchurch.
“This is adding travelling time to the trip but we are doing our best to minimise the impact on customers,” says Mark
Stewart.
