Sharing lives shaped by war
Dunedin (Wednesday, 16 November 2016) – Two women whose lives were shaped by war are the subject of separate author talks in
Dunedin this month.
Authors Miriam Frank and Jay Margrave will give public talks about their books The Unfinished Portrait: A Journey Around My Mother and Can Her Glory Ever Face?
Dunedin Public Libraries Events Co-ordinator Kay Mercer says the visiting authors have incredible stories to tell.
“Miriam had a remarkable childhood in the upheaval of the late 30s in Europe. Her biography reconstructs a life full of
interesting characters and she touches on some of life’s big questions; how can we ever truly know those closest to us?
And is it possible to find a home when you live a life of perpetual motion?
“Jay’s biography, Can Her Glory Ever Face?, studies Mary Seacole who was once voted the greatest black Briton. After being refused permission to join army nurses
in the Crimea, she established her own facility to care for sick officers. She frequently braved the battlefield to
nurse the wounded and became known as ‘Mother Seacole’.”
