Evening traffic update for State Highway 2 Wellington -7.45pm update

The NZ Transport Agency thanks motorists for their patience as flooding and slips caused road closures and long delays in and around the Wellington region on Tuesday 15 November.

The Transport Agency and their contractors worked hard throughout the day to re-open roads and stabilise slips as quickly and safely as possible.

Now that the water has receded there are still a number of sections of the highway and road network that require repairs, including a slip on the side of State Highway 2 on ramp at Ngauranga. Engineers are assessing the slip and what remedial work will be required to make it stable. In the meantime, motorists are being directed via a temporary deviation on to State Highway 2.

For motorists heading north from Ngauranga Gorge and the Old Hutt Road on to State Highway 2 there are significant delays on Tuesday evening. An alternative option for those travelling south on State Highway 1 and wanting to access State Highway 2, is to consider continuing south on State Highway 1 into Wellington, take the Hawkestone off ramp and access State Highway 1 northbound to then rejoin State Highway 2 just north of Ngauranga.

“It’s great that we have been able to get access to State Highway 2 again. However until we can make the slip safe, motorists will need to use this temporary deviation. Until this slip is fully repaired, State Highway 2 on ramp northbound will remain at one lane,” Mark Owen, Regional Performance Manager, NZ Transport Agency says.

“The roads aren’t going to be 100 percent tomorrow. Some parts of the network have suffered significant damage and will require further assessment to identify permanent repairs, and motorists may continue to experience delays to the journeys. We want to thank motorists for their ongoing patience and understanding during this significant weather event which had a major impact on our roads,” Mr Owen says. “We continue to advise people to check for updates on our website and via our social media so that they can make informed decisions about their journeys.”
