Wellington highways – NZ Transport Agency media statement - update 4.40pm
The NZ Transport Agency is advising that while some roads out of Wellington have reopened, there are currently significant backlogs as some roads are reduced to one lane. Motorists should delay their journeys if possible, and exercise patience and common sense if already on the road.
Two lanes are now open northbound on State Highway 2 between Ngauranga and Petone, with speed restrictions. There are significant backlogs and congestion on this route. One lane is open southbound.
One option to get to from Wellington to the Hutt Valley is to use trains. Check www.metlink.org.nz for latest updates and timetables.
While State Highway 1 remains closed from Mackays Crossing, the closure point has been moved from Paremata to Steyne Avenue at Plimmerton.
Motorists should be prepared for congestion at Mana.
Due to severe flooding and slips the following roads are still closed:
· State Highway 58 from State Highway 1 at Paremata to Haywards Interchange at State Highway 2
· Grays Road
· Paekakariki Hill Road
· State Highway 1 between Mackays Crossing and Steyne Avenue at Plimmerton is closed in both directions .
There are slips and surface flooding along State Highway 1 between Johnsonville and Porirua so if travel is necessary on this route, motorists should take extra care, watch following distances and speed.
People can call 0800 44 44 49 for updates and the Transport Agency’s website and social media accounts will be also updated as more information is available.
