Council services operating as normal following quakes
Palmerston North City Council has confirmed that all of the city’s key services are operating as normal following last
night’s quakes. This includes Council owned buildings.
“The Earthquake Commission has not identified any faults, but we have taken a precautionary approach and inspected all
of our services and buildings,” says PNCC City Enterprises General Manager and Civil Defence Controller Ray McIndoe.
“We have no concerns and are confident everything is operating as normal.”
The Fitzherbert Bridge has sustained some minor damage but a thorough inspection has confirmed it is structurally sound.
“The bridge was specifically engineered to flex in earthquakes and the damage to the railings is superficial,” says PNCC
Roading Manager Graeme Tong.
“The damaged portions of the railing are currently marked with green tape and repairs will commence shortly.”
