KiwiRail services operating in Christchurch and Invercargill

KiwiRail services are operating in Christchurch and Invercargill

KiwiRail advises that rail services are now running between Christchurch and Invercargill.

Passenger train services the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific in the South Island are not running. The Northern Explorer is currently running only to Palmerston North and the Capital Connection is not running while the lines are inspected.

An inspection of the North Island Main Truck Line (NIMT) is underway but has been impeded by strong aftershocks.

A train has stopped near Kaikoura, as is procedure when an earthquake hits. The driver is safe and the train will remain stationary for the time being.

The Interislander ferry terminals in Wellington and Picton are being assessed for damage. Ferry sailings have been cancelled until a full assessment can be made of the terminals.

The Kaitaki and Aratere are at anchor in Wellington Harbour. The Kaiarahi is currently standing off Picton, with 20 passengers onboard. The ship cannot be berthed at this time due to damage sustained by her drawbridge during this morning’s earthquake.

Further updates will be available throughout the morning. Please be advised commuter services in Auckland and Wellington are managed by TransDev and Metlink respectively. TransDev can be contacted on 09 969 7777 and Metlink can be contacted on 0800 801 700.
