Evacuation For People within 1km Of Canterbury Coastline

14/11/2016
Canterbury Emergency Statement

MEDIA STATEMENT #2
EVACUTAION

The Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Canterbury Group is telling people within one kilometre of the Canterbury coastline to evacuate inland or to higher ground.

This is a precaution as we are not expecting substantial waves or damage on land.

Report serious injury or fires to the emergency services (dial 111). It could take some time for emergency services to determine priorities and respond accordingly.

We advise people in the affected area to:
• If you live on low lying ground within one kilometre of the Christchurch coastline head to high ground
• Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities), stay off beaches and shore areas. Do not go sightseeing.
• Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions
• Make emergency calls only to avoid overloading phone lines
We will release further statements as the situation evolves and more information becomes available.
