More Central City parking for
Christmas
People heading into the City Centre to shop and celebrate over the festive season will have a range of parking options to choose from.
The Crossing
Christchurch City Council and the Carter Group are working together to provide 200 free short-term car parks to support the retail precinct.
The Carter Group will open two floors of its car park at The Crossing, providing free 2-hour car parking leading up to and over the Christmas period. The car park will close after the holiday period to be fitted out with the latest parking technology and officially open in April 2017.
Philip Carter from the Carter Group – the Christchurch business behind The Crossing – is delighted to have worked with the Council to offer free 2-hour parking.
“We are really pleased that the Central City is starting to take off and The Crossing development has been one of the major projects spearheading its revitalisation.
“We are committed to the rejuvenation of the Central City, and enabling people during business hours to park for free while they shop is one way we can support local businesses,” he said.
General Manager City Services David Adamson says: “It is expected that the additional car parking will help relieve the anticipated demand in the Central City. To ensure a thriving Central City, it’s important that people are able to access local businesses they need through multiple modes of transport.
“We appreciate this gesture by the Carter Group, especially in time for Christmas.”
The public car parks open on 11 November, in time for Show Weekend.
Restart Car Park
The temporary Lichfield Street car park, opposite Ballantynes, will be staying open for Christmas before closing at the end of December.
Art Gallery Car Park
On 21 November 2016, the car park behind the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu will be opening. There will be 115 short term car parks available for Art Gallery visitors only.
East Lichfield
The Manchester / Lichfield car park will be reduced to 50 car parks to enable construction of the new East Frame residential area to continue.
Lichfield Street
Construction is underway for the new Lichfield Street car park.
Once completed, the new Lichfield St parking building will provide over 800 public car parks in the Central City. Works are due to be completed in August 2017.
