INAUGURATION
The inauguration of Kāpiti Coast District Council's new Mayor and line-up of councillors and community board members is
taking place next week.
Over the past week and continuing next week the priority has been an induction process for councillors and community
board members as they continue to learn about the vast array of work that takes place to keep the Kāpiti Coast District
running, from transport networks to water, waste, growth, our community facilities and much more.
The inauguration ceremony is 7pm Tuesday 25 October at the Kāpiti College’s main hall, Margaret Road, Raumati Beach.
All elected members will be sworn into office at this event, which is also the first formal council meeting, and the
Mayor will also announce his appointment of the Deputy Mayor.
The meeting will be reconvened the following day at 5pm Wednesday 26 October in Council chambers where Mayor K
Gurunathan will announce the committee structure and councillor responsibilities and appointments.
POPULAR KĀPITI ARTS TRAIL RETURNS NEXT WEEKEND
The Kāpiti Arts Trail is back in town showcasing a huge range of art over two weekends.
Different artistic mediums will be exhibited in 62 studios, four hubs and 13 galleries around the district on the
weekend of October 29/30 and again on November 5/6.
Kāpiti Coast District Council's Libraries and Arts Project Co-ordinator Jaenine Parkinson says there’s an impressive
line-up of artists again this year.
“This will be a great event as always with a wonderful mix of artists involved, including a number of new ones featuring
their work for the first time,” she says.
“Having the event spread over two weekends gives people more time to visit the talented artists we have here in Kāpiti,
talk to them about their work and enjoy our wonderfully diverse range of art.
“And, if you’re looking for creative Christmas gifts, there will be plenty to choose from at the different sites.”

MATARIKI KOROWAI UNVEILED
A stunning matariki korowai, or cloak, made out of recycled materials by a local artist and students from around the
district, was unveiled at Paraparaumu Library this week.
Through the Creative Communities Scheme, and in partnership with Kāpiti Coast District Council, artist JoAnna Mere ran a
series of workshops with local primary school students during matariki to create the korowai.
Its titled kahuparapiki or ‘cloak of plastic’ and is made out of recycled plastic milk bottles and metals, fishing twine, and broken jewellery
and beads.
“I loved working with all the children; it was a working party,” Ms Mere says. “They were totally engaged, excited and
really inspiring. The cloak represents kaitiakitanga, earth guardianship, and is a visual commentary on sustainable
living.”
The Council’s Kaumātua Koro Don Te Maipi blessed the cloak at the unveiling and was supported by Kāpiti primary pupils
singing waiata.
Library Youth Services Coordinator Pam Coleman says the cloak is a wonderful piece to have on show and will be moving
throughout the district over the next month.
“It was great to see the development of the korowai over several months with so much involvement from the students,
culminating in a beautiful piece of work,” she says.
“We are very proud to share it with the public in all our libraries.”
The cloak will be on display at Paraparaumu Library until Thursday 27 October. It will then move to:
• Whitireia Kāpiti Campus for the first Kāpiti Arts Trail weekend on October 29/30
• Paekākāriki School from 31 October-4 November
• Whitireia again for the second Arts Trail weekend on November 5/6
• Waikanae Library from 7-21 November
• Ōtaki Library from 22 November indefinitely.
