Oily debris collected from Port area

21 October 2016

Debris in containment bags

Earlier today the Port of Tauranga notified the Bay of Plenty Regional Council that debris had been spotted in the water within the vicinity of Berth 10.

Council staff from the Maritime and Pollution Prevention teams responded and removed approximately 80kg of clumpy oiled flotsam/jetsam and sea grass. A visual inspection of shorelines around Ferguson Park and Pilot Bay were also undertaken to ensure debris had not been carried outside the port area. No further debris was evident.

The Council has now commenced an investigation to ascertain the source of this debris.

As people are out enjoying the Harbour this weekend, it is a timely reminder to ensure that when debris is sighted, it is reported to the Regional Council’s Pollution Prevention Hotline, phone 0800 884 883, or emailinfo@boprc.govt.nz
