Local History Week

You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy some of the great line-up of events in this year’s Local History Week. Over 30 events held over the week offer a variety of subjects presented through talks, walks, workshops, displays and interactive events which all give a great insight into our local heritage and history.

Local History Week is organised by Palmerston North City Library’s Heritage Team, in conjunction with other community groups and individuals.

Some of the highlights during the week include:
Recreating The Square with Lego – this runs all week in Tech Space and will suit all ages

Book launch - Racing the Boys: A fascinating historical novel based on a local identity

Five lunchtime talks: Mineral Wealth; the AA Municipal Baths; the Final Battle Fundraising Campaign and Centrepoint Theatre

Tours: Te Manawa (textiles and Taonga); Massey University Archives; Lethenty Historic Home (Bulls); the David Warnock Medical Museum; Woodville Cemetery;
Open Days: PN Electric Power Station; Caccia Birch Hoffman Kiln

Mina McKenzie Memorial Lecture: Anna Green – Remembering the European/Pakeha Family Past through object and Things

Workshops: From Past to Present Artfully; Make Butter and Pikelets like the ‘old days’.

Share Your Memories: Palmerston North’s Department Stores created many memories which we are encouraging people to share.

Displays: Snapshot of Photographic History; Palmerston North’s Historic Buildings

Performance: Warren and Virginia Warbrick – TAHI80 – The Hole in the Ground
Guided Walk: Te Kōrari. Learn more about the history of Te Marae o Hine and the Peeti Te Awe Awe Memorial
