You may already be aware of the  popular E.C.Read’n Summer Reading Programme.  While we have room for 600 children to take part in the programme – we are usually oversubscribed and need to hold a ballot. It could well be one of the most popular free summer activities on offer. 

Summer Reading Programme – 20 years on and still increasing in popularity

While children are away from school during the summer holidays their reading progress can drop off.  This is one of the reasons why the annual E.C. Read’n Summer Reading Programme hosted by Palmerston North City Libraries is one of the city’s most popular holiday activities. 

The Summer Reading programme makes reading fun, encourages children to explore new books and has proven to improve their level of reading.  When you throw in rewards, incentives and activities it is not surprising there is a high demand for the programme and why a high percentage of those taking part qualify to attend the programme’s finale.

This summer, 600 children aged between 4 and 13 years will take part in the programme to be held at the Central Library and our Community Libraries in Ashhurst, Roslyn, Awapuni and Te Patikitiki in Highbury. Report options are also available in Te Reo, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Spanish, Japanese and German.

This year is the 20th anniversary of the E.C Read’n Summer Reading programme, which has only been made possible by the continuous sponsorship from the Eastern and Central Community Trust.

“Sharing the children’s reading with family members is strongly encouraged,” says Palmerston North City Library Children’s Programme Coordinator, Rhonda Chenery. “Reading is still one of the most powerful tools for creating life-long learners. Attending the library regularly also fosters new relationships between children and librarians.”

Due to the popularity of the programme, a ballot will be held from Mon 31 October – Sun 13 November as there are limited places. Details of the ballot can be found on the Palmerston North City Library website – www.http://citylibrary.pncc. or at any of the city’s community libraries.
