Put your health first before long weekend
Hawke’s Bay people are being asked to take ownership of their health prior to the long weekend to avoid lengthy delays for after hours clinical care.
Hawke’s Bay District Health Board Chief Medical and Dental Officer Dr John Gommans said while there was always excitement around the upcoming Labour Weekend/Hawke’s Bay Anniversary celebrations, it was important simple steps were taken to ensure medical needs were ticked off the ‘to do’ list and contingency plans were in place.
“Individuals and those caring for young children and the elderly should make sure medical prescriptions are up-to-date and any early onset of illness is checked by their doctor or health professional during the week before the holiday period begins,” said Dr Gommans.
It was also important to remind people the hospital’s emergency department was for emergencies only and those seeking non-urgent care during the long weekend could experience lengthy wait times.
“We ask that people Choose Well to get the right care from the right place and would like to give a friendly reminder that an emergency department is for emergencies only,” said Dr Gommans.
Chief Medical Officer of Primary Care, Dr Mark Peterson, said there were various healthcare options available to people over the long weekend.
“Preparing for health needs in advance can often mean people get through the holiday period without needing to seek medical attention,” said Dr Peterson.
“However, for people that do require non-urgent care there are after hours clinics that will be open. People can also call Healthline 24/7 for free advice on 0800 611 116,” he said.
Locals can visit the Our Health website at www.ourhealth.co.nz for a list of pharmacies and clinics that will be open during the long weekend. In an emergency dial 111.
