Grandpa Figs Celebrates Two Years of Comedy in Christchurch
Post quake Christchurch can be a cruel mistress for any business, and the cities promoters know that better than most. From lack of venues to an empathic populus, it’s a tough time making a living promoting gigs. However Grandpa Figs, a fictional half man / half fig has managed to weather the storm whilst growing an almost non existent comedy scene.
Over the past two years Grandpa Figs has been working hard expanding the number of regular gigs happening in the Canterbury region whilst developing stronger relations with comedy in Dunedin and Nelson. They’ve also taken on some major projects including a nationwide tour and, of course, The Comedy Carnival, Chch’s very own comedy festival which is set to return in 2017.
With the company reaching the two year mark this month the growth in that scene is obvious and Grandpa Figs is celebrating with a stacked week of shows in the city. The week will kick off on Wednesday 26th with a joint venture between Figsy and fellow Chch Comedy company SpadeFace’s fundraiser to get shows down to the Dunedin Fringe Festival. Thursday will see a new concept show which features comedians trying to out do each other with real stories. Rangiora gets a taste of comedy on Friday and Saturday’s gig will take place in Wellington, giving a couple of Christchurch acts the chance to strut their stuff in the cultural capital.
