Waste materials get new lease of life in two FREE kids workshops over Labour Weekend
Kids will take empty paint cans, paint, cardboard carpet roll tubes and more and turn them into an art installation and
musical instruments at two free workshops over Labour Weekend. These two workshops run by Gap Filler are part of the
2016 Festival of Transitional Architecture: We Have the Means, which runs from 21 - 24 October.
The first workshop will take place at Gap Filler and Greening the Rubble’s Sound Garden project on Saturday October
22,1- 3pm. Children will make musical instruments from a range of waste materials and participate in a musical jam
session and concert with New Brighton’s Natural Magic pirates to experiment with the new instruments they’ve just made.
This workshop is suitable for children aged five and over.
In the second workshop, on Sunday October 23, Kids Can Up-Cycle, children can contribute to making a kinetic artwork from empty paint cans and unwanted paint. The interactive, moveable
artwork will be installed on a vacant site in the city, just across from the Margaret Mahy playground, where it can be
played with and enjoyed by passers-by. The workshop will also provide children with a way to engage with issues around
waste products and their disposal in New Zealand.
“More than six litres of household paint is sold each year per person in New Zealand. That’s potentially resulting in a
lot of waste paint” says Project Developer for Kids Can Up-Cycle, Sally Airey. Working with Resene’s paint recycling programme, PaintWise,
Gap Filler has accessed waste paint and paint cans for the purposes of the Kids Can Up-Cycle workshop and installation. “Through these two workshops we hope to help more children understand how they can look at waste materials more
creatively and encourage them to become more aware about waste in their everyday lives.”
Kids Can Upcycle will be held at The Commons (corner Kilmore and Durham Streets) on Sunday 23 October from 10am - 12pm.
This free workshop is designed for children of ages eight and up. Children will be involved painting during the
workshop, so old clothes are required. The finished interactive artwork that the kids will help to make will be
installed in the weeks immediately after FESTA.
