MOTAT Masquerade - What lies behind the mask?
The most spine tingling time of the year is here again! For one night only MOTAT’s historic grounds transform into the
backdrop of Auckland’s spookiest Halloween event.
On 29 October from 7pm, guests will be transported back in time to a Victorian Halloween and beyond as they don their
scariest costume and eeriest mask to explore the Museum and its collection. It’s the one night of the year where nooks
and crannies take on a sinister chill as darkness creeps in and ghouls lurk around every corner.
MOTAT’s Visitor Engagement Manager, Sarah Somerville explains how throughout history people have used masks to hide
their true identity and transform into something else. “We wanted to explore this concept of metamorphosis and ‘the
other’ by using a combination of sound, light music and monsters,” she says. “It’s like a waking dream where the lines
of reality become blurred and nothing is quite as it seems.”
During the course of the evening, visitors will learn a lesson from Dr Frankenstein as he brings his monster to life or explore the haunted maze of Dr Jekyll’s lair. They can dance with masked revellers in the Metamorphoses Ballroom or dare each other to enter the Crypt. There is also The Market of a Hundred Faces, a Ghost Town, the dark Steampunk Wonderland and much more just waiting to be explored!
Some of the more unusual Victorian practices of this period will also be highlighted – guests are bound to find the
custom of death masks both morbid and bizarre as they provide a fascinating example of how differently death has been
viewed in another era.
“While bright and cheerful during the day time, MOTAT can transform into an eerie place at night. We are planning to
bring our grounds and Victorian styled buildings to life with characters, activities and surprises. This will not be a
night for the faint hearted,” warns Ms Somerville.
