Police and UnisonFibre Initiative Continues to Connect Local Community

Monday 10 October 2016 - Six Maraenui primary schools will take to the basketball court this Friday, as part of an ongoing initiative supported by UnisonFibre and local Police.

Now in its fourth year of running, the ‘Nui Street Ball’ event is organised by the Maraenui Police who are passionate about connecting with, and bringing together, their community.

Police Constable, Hoki Ward said the event, which began as a challenge between two schools, had continued to be such a success that organisers extended it to involve six schools this year.

“We are thrilled at how it has evolved and grown in just four years, and there was no hesitation in agreeing to bring new school’s into the mix.

“It’s all about supporting the kids of Maraenui and encouraging them to get involved in sport and physical activity, so the more of them we can reach the better.”

He said the opportunity to build on the great relationship between Police and the community of Maraenui was also a key driver behind the event.

UnisonFibre General Manager, Mike McGarvey said the Company shared the view of Maraenui Police around the importance of strengthening community relationships.

“We look forward to this event each year now, and we’re pleased to see how it has grown.

“We bring along Powerman and a range of give-aways on the day, which the kids just love. It’s great to be part of something that has such a positive impact on a local community.”

Teams of Year 6 students from Te Awa, Marewa, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Te Arahou, Maraenui, Richmond and Henry Hill primary schools will play four-on-four basketball in the car park at Maraenui Shopping Centre this Friday 14 October, from 9.30am until 12pm.

UnisonFibre will host an after-match barbeque for participants and their supporters.

“It’s an event worth backing so, if you can, come on down and support these kids,” said Mr McGarvey.
