Auckland's safety needs a united and more local approach

Auckland Mayoral Candidate, Vic Crone, says today's crime statistics show a need for greater resourcing, along with a more coordinated and local response to crime.

“The latest crime stats echo the concerns I’ve heard loud and clear across Auckland around safety,” says Ms Crone.

“Part of the Mayor’s role is to work with Government to secure the safety investment we need in Auckland. I will be advocating for increased policing numbers that match our fast growing population. But it's not all about numbers and they should definitely be focused on the right activities, including preventing burglaries.

“Council also needs to plays its part. My budget will prioritise better lighting, patrolling and smart CCTV surveillance in public places like parks and around public transport.

“Strong and inclusive communities are safer communities. We have a disconnected region with pockets of Auckland feeling disillusioned - no surprise given our current council and its leadership.

“My plan will put more decision making power in the hands of local boards to reconnect communities and provide local solutions. That includes lifting their capability to oppose alcohol licences in their neighbourhoods."
