Calling Clan Hororata
The Chieftain has put the call out; it is time to assemble Clan Hororata! The Hororata Highland Games would not be
possible without the support of its many volunteers, and it is this Clan which ensures the event is an amazing day,
showcasing the entire community. The volunteers come from within the Selwyn District, wider Canterbury, as far north as
Auckland and south to Dunedin; all to be part of Clan Hororata.
“Although I have never lived in Hororata or the Selwyn District I consider myself a local at the Hororata Highland
Games. The community spirit is so overwhelming I get caught up in it even more each year,” commented Paul Kofoed from
Christchurch, who has been involved in the event since its inception. “I attend many major events and I can honestly say
the Hororata Highland Games is one of the best, from the Chairman of the Trust to the hundreds of volunteers; they are
all passionate and proud of what they achieve.”
Not only are 180 volunteers needed on event day, it takes a big team to transform the stunning Hororata Domain into the
Hororata Highland Games and then to pack up again on Sunday. As a member of the Clan, all volunteers receive an adult
pass to the event on Saturday the 5th of November plus an invite to the Prime Smoke Clan Hororata BBQ held immediately
after the Games. Being a rural event, it is well catered with volunteers receiving lunch each day with plenty of
homemade baking to fill the gaps.
“It is an amazing event to be a part of. I started helping in the car park the first few years (which believe it or not
is a lot of fun) and now I am on the committee working on the stalls and coordinating the volunteers,” said committee
member, Jenny Mackenzie.
“We are always looking at how we can ensure all ‘Clan’ who volunteer get the most out of their experience. This year,
thanks to the Selwyn District Council, we are excited to be able to give each volunteer who helps on event day a new
Clan Hororata tee shirt.”
The volunteers also get to vote on how a $4000.00 community fund is allocated to four nominated community groups. The
community groups who have been nominated this year are the Hororata Parish, Hororata Golf Club, Hororata Scouts and
Windwhistle School/Playgroup.
The Hororata Highland Games is on Saturday the 5th of November at the Hororata Domain. Anyone interested in becoming
