Shade in the park a work of art

A shade structure in the revamped Havelock North Village Green will be a work of art, thanks to artist and designer David Trubridge.

Shading the area looking over the new playground, the Trubridge-designed structure will mirror the silhouette of Te Mata Peak.

The concept is being donated by Trubridge, with construction covered by the Landmark Trust and Hastings District Council. Council’s share is coming from its budget for shade features in the Village Green.

Trubridge said the idea had been in his head for quite some time, originally considered for the centre of the village, “but there wasn’t really the space for it”.

“The playground is perfect. It’s a sculptural piece which depicts Te Mata o Rongokako; the sleeping giant.

“The colours we’re still deciding on but they will be bright, in keeping with the playground, adding another playful element.”

Designing art with a practical purpose takes time to ensure both aims are achieved without too many compromises, but it is very satisfying, says Trubridge. “Like the lighting we do, it is about getting the best of both worlds.”

Wooden tables circling some of the legs will add another practical element.

While there will be some shade installed by opening day in December, the Trubridge work is not expected to be finished and installed until later in the summer.
