Community invited to New Brighton Regeneration Hub

The community is invited to visit a new hub in New Brighton Mall to take part in the area’s regeneration, talk about local matters and find out more about plans for the east.

The New Brighton Regeneration Hub opens its doors today (26 September 2016). Initiated in response to the community by Christchurch City Council, Development Christchurch Limited (DCL) and Regenerate Christchurch, it will be staffed by the agencies and open to the public.

DCL Chief Executive Rob Hall says the hub will be a great benefit to work already going on in the New Brighton community.

“DCL is charged with supporting the regeneration of the city as a whole – and New Brighton in particular – through pursuing development ideas, investment opportunities and regeneration projects. We know that we need community involvement for our New Brighton projects, like the development a hot salt water pool facility, investigations into a beach promenade and delivery of the Suburban Master Plan, to succeed.

“We’re already talking with the local community, but having a space to base our work and a direct link to community groups and local people will be incredibly valuable,” Mr Hall says.

Regenerate Christchurch chief executive Ivan Iafeta welcomed the opening of the New Brighton hub.

"Regenerate Christchurch is committed to working with communities to plan regeneration. The hub is well-placed to support this."

Council Chief Executive Dr Karleen Edwards says that, as well as a space for city regeneration partners to work on plans for the local area and discuss ideas for the future, the hub is a place for the community.

“We want to hear from the local community about their thoughts and ideas for the future. We also want to make sure this community space works for them and the hub will evolve to suit. The regeneration of New Brighton is an important piece of work for the Council and there are projects underway to support this, but we know we need to listen to the community if we are really going to make it work.”

Initially, the hub will be open Monday to Friday, from 10am to 4pm, at Shop 5, 78 Brighton Mall (in Carnaby Lane). Everyone is welcome.
