UCOL Hairdressers to recreate history
UCOL Hairdressing students will be
battling it out in the annual History of Hair competition to be held
on Wednesday.
Students from UCOL Wairarapa, and Whanganui will join their Palmerston North counterparts to compete to see who has the best style and best portfolio.
As part of their programme, the Certificate of Hairdressing (Salon Support) students are required to research a culture or era of their choice and depict it in a hair style.
The students will present a diverse range of styles and eras, with the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as Japan, being popular sources of inspiration.
Students will have one hour in class to recreate their chosen style on a mannequin, with the finished products then being presented in the Atrium.
UCOL Hairdressing Lecturer Gillian Gosper says that the competition gives the students the experience of researching an era or culture, and then putting what they’ve learnt into practice.
“It’s about looking back at styles from the past, and how we can bring them into today’s world.”
In a new twist on the event, Certificate in Hairdressing (Practice) students will be competing in a separate competition for the best long hair up-style.
The styles and research portfolios will be judged by hairdressing lecturers from all three UCOL campuses.
When: Wednesday 21st September from 10.00am.
Where: UCOL Atrium, Princess Street entrance.
