Getting Charged at MOTAT This Weekend
Electric Vehicle (EV) enthusiasts can now charge up at MOTAT while they explore transport technology from the past,
present and future.
As part of its expanding network of EV chargers, Vector has installed a standard charger at the Museum of Transport and
Technology (MOTAT). To celebrate its opening and International Drive Electric Week, the Museum has collaborated with The Better NZ Trust to host the largest gathering of electric vehicles New Zealand has ever seen on Sunday 18 September.
There will be over 70 electric vehicles on-site, including the Tesla Model S, BMW i3, Nissan Leaf, Mitsubishi Plug-In
Hybrid Outlander and many more.
Vector Chief Executive Simon Mackenzie says the event is a wonderful opportunity to highlight the increasing uptake and
popularity of EVs as more charging stations become available around Auckland. “We are looking forward to seeing all
types of EV models at our newest charging station at MOTAT on Saturday.”
Electric vehicles and hybrid engines are all the buzz of the automotive industry and yet some remain doubtful about the
convenience and reliability of these futuristic vehicles. To make it easier for motorists to transition to electric
vehicles, Vector has deployed 12 rapid chargers across Auckland along with 9 standard chargers.
“Vector is committed to providing accessible and convenient EV charger infrastructure which will help build confidence
for those new to the technology and address any range anxiety,” says Mr Mackenzie.
The group of EV enthusiasts participating in the event at MOTAT will be sharing their personal experience of owning an
electric vehicle, the benefits they offer and how the appropriate infrastructure is being created in New Zealand.
Whether visitors are interested in zero carbon renewable energy technologies or are avid motoring fans, they are sure to
be impressed by the rare sight of a Tesla fleet parked side-by-side.
MOTAT’s General Manager of Museum Experience Malcolm Anderson says that MOTAT recognises the long-term benefits of
electric vehicles to both the environment and motorists. “We are very excited to offer EV owners the facility to charge
their vehicles right outside the Museum and it’s great to be involved in the drive to raise EV awareness and making it
simpler for motorists to switch over.”
The Vector charger opens at MOTAT on Sunday 18 September and is accessible from Stadium Road. The 70+ electric vehicles
will be on display at the Museum between 10am and 4pm, general MOTAT admission fees apply.
