David Hay unsatisfied with government contribution to CRL

David Hay unsatisfied with government contribution to CRL

14 September 2016

"Good, but not good enough." said mayoral candidate David Hay, in response to today's announcement that the Government would fund half the cost of the City Rail Loop.

"The City Rail Loop is the key to creating a rapid rail system for Auckland. Building this part of the system unlocks the potential to build a modern, efficient, low-carbon transport system for Auckland." said Mr Hay.

"The government provides 100% funding for motorways, which have failed Auckland, so far, and which will never solve our transport problems. It should stop spending money on the failing motorway system. They are throwing good money after bad."

"We need to look to the future. We must think about how Auckland will function, in a few decades from now, when nobody is driving a petrol or diesel powered private motor car."

"Auckland needs an electric rapid rail system that serves the whole city. It's the only way we can move enough people on, off, around and across the central isthmus. That can never be achieved with cars, however they are powered, and whether they drive themselves or not."

"The government controls Auckland's transport budget. The government needs to listen to Auckland. The government has to stop spending money on motorways, and start building the Rapid Transit Network." said Mr Hay.
