CTOC advises drivers to plan ahead during traffic light work

The Christchurch Transport Operations Centre (CTOC) is taking measures to minimise traffic interruptions in preparation for a scheduled traffic signals communication outage in Christchurch's CBD tomorrow (Tuesday 6 September) and Wednesday 7 September.

Due to the requirement to relocate services during the An Accessible City road improvement works on St Asaph Street, the traffic signals within Christchurch's four avenues will be locked into a standard phasing sequence to maintain traffic flow while a communications cabinet is relocated.

Traffic signals around the city, Rangiora, Rolleston, Ashburton and Timaru are all controlled and monitored via the CTOC operations room at the Christchurch City Council offices in Hereford Street.

Usually the Real Time Operations team is able to monitor, react and manipulate the traffic signals in real time when there are unusual traffic flows, or an incident or signals fault. However from 8am Tuesday to late Wednesday they will not be able to manipulate the traffic signals within Christchurch's four avenues creating an increased risk of delays.

CTOC manager Ryan Cooney says that while staff will be doing all they can to minimise the impact on road users, they are asking the public to take care on the roads while this work is being undertaken.

"The important message for the public is that the traffic lights will still be working, but they may not be phasing as efficiently as expected.

"Our travel information team will be keeping the media up to date with any unusual delays on the network over this time, so road users are recommended to listen for updates on the radio, subscribe to the Transport for Christchurch Twitter and Facebook accounts, check www.tfc.govt.nz or to consider biking or walking into the city on Tuesday and Wednesday to avoid delays."

Traffic signals outside of the four avenues will be unaffected.
