Two Cars Slip repair work starts

Dunedin (Thursday, 18 August 2016) – The DCC has awarded the tender for repairing Two Cars Slip to Clearwaters Otago Ltd. The tender is worth $570,000.

Work will start on the site next week, and should be complete by mid-December.

The DCC’s Group Manager Transport Richard Saunders says, “We’re looking forward to completing this repair work for the Peninsula community and visitors, and we’re grateful for the community’s patience with the process.”

The first phase will involve site preparation and testing, which the contractors expect to complete during September. The contractors will cut in a working bench, then drill and install test anchors. They will use the anchors to test the strength of the rock under the ground and determine the specifications for the retaining wall’s anchors.

Once the testing phase is finished, the contractors will move off-site for a month until the drilling contractor is available, and then work will start on the permanent installation of the anchors in late October.

Throughout the project, the road will mostly remain open as a single lane, as it is now. The contractors will need to close the road for one week in early November to deliver, drill and place the steel pipes for the retaining wall.

Mr Saunders says, “We’re keen to make the repair work as smooth as possible for the Peninsula community, and it’s great that road closures can be kept to a minimum.”

The repairs will take longer than initially hoped. The site required complex geotechnical analysis, and it was important to find the right design to address the ground conditions. Extra time also had to be built in to account for the availability of expert subcontractors.

Other slips on Highcliff Road and St Leonards Drive are tendered separately.
