Port ‘game changer’ automation
– good for business
The automation of Ports of
Auckland’s container terminal giving an additional 30-40
years of capacity creates certainty for business going
forward.
Head of Auckland Chamber of Commerce Michael Barnett was responding to the Ports of Auckland uptake of new technology as a way to address the port’s capacity constraint. “It means that they can do more on the same space.”
As New Zealand’s biggest import port with 80% of freight going to customers within 20 kilometres of the port, it is important that the port continues to demonstrate its keenness to become more efficient and do so through innovation and introducing technology.
As only the third port in the world to automate this way, the innovation the port is showing has to be good for ‘brand Auckland’ as a progressive city, said Mr Barnett.
