Super Rugby Final - huge win for the Capital

Super Rugby Final - huge win for the Capital

Wellington has won the jackpot with a home Super Rugby final said Jo Coughlan, Wellington City Councillor and Chair Economic Growth and Arts Committee.

"Wellingtonians will come out in droves to back the Hurricanes. A sellout crowd will include visitors from from around the region and further afield - staying for a night or two.

"It's been a great week for Wellington and hosting the final against the Lions is the icing on the cake.

"The city is already buzzing. We had the quarter-final last week, David Jones' opening on Wednesday, the semi-final last night and now a final to look foward to.

""This is great news for the hospitality sector, hotels and restaurants as thousands of visitors will be coming into the city.

With the Lions coming from South Africa there will be strong international interest as well.

"This focus on Wellington and increased visitor numbers further highlights the need for us to increase the number of hotel beds in the city. The new Sofitel will make a difference however if we are to future proof our tourism offering we need at least another 1500 beds in Wellington.

"Retail will see a big lift too as David Jones keeps drawing the crowds and other top retailers into Lambton Quay.

"It's going to be another great weekend - great for rugby and great for retail"!
