Second weekend of safety repairs - Carmen Road

Second weekend of safety repairs - Carmen Road

Carmen Road, Hornby, Christchurch, second closure at railway lines

KiwiRail’s safety repairs to its rail crossing at Carmen Road, Hornby, part of State Highway 1, between Main South Road and Waterloo Road, will create detours for north and southbound drivers this weekend.

The work starts Friday night at 7 pm, 28 July, running through to 6 am Monday morning, 1 August, at the latest.

Last weekend’s work went well in the dry conditions, said NZ Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright, with work completed before Monday morning. “Thanks to all drivers for taking care. If people can build in an extra 10 to 15 minutes travel time during the Saturday peak hours of 11 am to 1 pm, or travel outside those hours, it will help with trips to the airport from Hornby and the Hub shopping centre,” she said.

· Drivers can still get into The Hub Hornby and all the shops in the area as usual, but the north and southbound exits and entries via Carmen Road will be closed.

· People can check the Transport for Christchurch travel time dashboard to see the time estimates for key journeys around the city including the Hornby to Airport trip. http://tfc.govt.nz/current-conditions/traffic-dashboard/

Detour routes
The detour route for northbound traffic (towards the airport) which would normally take Carmen Road off Main South Road is in place before the Hub Hornby ie Parker St, Gilberthorpes Road, Buchanans Road. Southbound drivers on Carmen Road will be detoured onto Waterloo Road then Parker St.

Drivers might also like to use Pound Road and Buchanans Road as detours.
