Mt Roskill now a million dollar suburb: Public meeting to discuss the housing crisis
“It is astonishing to many of us that Mt Roskill is now a ‘million dollar suburb’ yet that is what official statistics
now show, with a 13.5% increase in local house prices over the past year from $916,000 to $1,040,000”, says Labour
candidate for Mt Roskill Michael Wood.*
“As I campaign around Mt Roskill, the housing crisis is the single biggest issue that people want to discuss. Local
people tell me that they are worried about falling home ownership rates, massive rental hikes, the cold, damp state of
many state houses, and increasing homelessness in our community”
“Roskill has always been a community where ordinary people have been able to get a start. I shifted here with my wife to
start our family in the early 2000s when housing was still affordable. It’s simply wrong that young people don’t have
the same opportunity today”
“It’s worse that our government ignores the problem and tells people to be patient”
“Labour recognises the scale of the crisis and has a plan to build more houses, crack down on speculation, improve
rental standards, and support emergency housing. I will be holding my first public meeting of the Mt Roskill campaign on
