Central Otago highway maintenance contract being negotiated

New Central Otago highway maintenance contract being negotiated by NZ Transport Agency

The NZ Transport Agency is currently negotiating a new maintenance contract for the Central Otago highway network with a partnership led by Fulton Hogan Ltd.

Fulton Hogan is the preferred supplier for the $65 million seven year contract, designed to deliver greater efficiencies in terms of operation and costs, says the Transport Agency’s Southern Business Unit Manager Ian Duncan.

“Network Outcomes Contracts are a new way of doing business. In the past, there have been several contracts delivering maintenance work on the network.

“With one contract for maintaining highways in the Queenstown-Lakes and Central Otago districts, the Transport Agency is expecting savings across the board,” he says.

Fulton Hogan has formed a partnership with professional engineering services provider Opus Consultants, Whitestone Contracting Ltd and Base Contracting Ltd, who will collectively deliver the new contract covering 537km of highway.

“The new contract is currently being negotiated with the preferred supplier and is expected to be awarded next month.”

Mr Duncan says this performance-based contract has a strong focus on delivering good quality outcomes for the network and all road users.

“Fulton Hogan has maintained the Central Otago highway network for the last five years, and has depots throughout the area, plus a good working knowledge of both the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts. Their consulting partner Opus has more than 20 years’ highway experience in the area.”

The new contract will take effect on 1 October, 2016.

Mr Duncan thanked all the contractors who in recent years have contributed to the maintenance and management of the Central Otago highway network, and those who tendered for this particular Network Outcomes Contract.
