Election nominations open tomorrow
If you see yourself as a potential leader and are passionate about Christchurch, now’s your chance to give local politics a go and have a say in your community’s future.
Nominations for candidates wishing to stand in this year’s local elections open tomorrow.
“We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in their local community to stand,” says Electoral Officer Jo Daly.
“Local government and democracy are a fundamental part of New Zealand society so that everyone’s voice can be heard.
“We need a range of elected members of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to ensure Christchurch’s diverse communities are represented.
“Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen and enrolled on the electoral roll.”
Candidates are encouraged to come forward as early as possible so they can get all the information they need. Visit www.ccc.govt.nz/elections, email elections2016@ccc.govt.nz or phone Jo Daly on 03 941 8581 to find out more.
Nominations close at noon on Friday 12 August, but candidates are asked not to leave it to the last minute to ensure incorrect information does not lead to an invalid nomination.
Voting papers will be sent out from 16 September 2016 and must be received by the Council before noon on Election Day, 8 October 2016.
