New Brighton 'Tiny Huts' design competition closes

The New Brighton ‘Tiny Huts’ design competition closed on Tuesday and the designs will be exhibited at 60 Brighton Mall opening on 6July. 90 entries were received and now the public have the opportunity to visit the exhibition and vote for their favourite design.

‘Tiny Huts’ is a play on English sea-side beach huts, and the idea of a competition received overwhelming support from the local community when first proposed earlier this year. 'Tiny Huts', each measuring two metres by two metres, are to be placed in New Brighton's town centre to liven up the seaside suburb's public places and showcase activities.

The ‘Tiny Huts’ will be in place over the 2016/17 summer season.

Burwood-Pegasus Community Board Chair Andrea Cummings says, “It is really pleasing to have so many designs come through. I’m looking forward to having the winning entries in place and inviting the city out to New Brighton over the summer to see them along with our other events and attractions.”

The exhibition of the designs will be held at 60 Brighton Mall between 6 and 19 July, open daily from 10am to 4pm. Visitors to the exhibition will be able to vote for their favourite design in both the open and schools categories. The judging panel will review the top voted designs to determine the winners. There will be five winning designs; one school design, three open and one public choice.

The judging panel consists of:

• Andrea Cummings, Burwood-Pegasus Community Board Chair

• Paul Zaanen, Manager of New Brighton Business and Landowners Association

• Libby Crawford, Owner and Creative Director of Libby & Ben

• Daniel Grinter, New Zealand Institute of Architects Committee

• Amy Knudsen, Executive Member of the Christchurch Youth Council

• Jess Tater, Junior Leader of Youth Alive Trust

Paul Zaanen, manager of the New Brighton Business and Landowners Association and one of the Tiny Huts judges says, “We are looking forward to showing off the entries at the exhibition starting next week. We hope to see plenty of people coming to have a look. Some of the entrants have even provided models so they will give a good idea of what they will look like once constructed.”

Once the winning designs have been chosen they will be matched with construction partners who will work with the designers to create the ‘Tiny Huts’. Each will build one of the winning designs.
