One month countdown to Auckland Exhibition

This week marks one month until The Real Ōpōtiki exhibition hits Ponsonby Road in Auckland.

The Real Ōpōtiki will be a vibrant exhibition of nationally and internationally recognised artists, along with some emerging artists, all with strong connections to Ōpōtiki. The exhibition showcases incredible talent with a wide range of works on display from traditional landscapes, sculpture, photography, jewellery, Māori Pihe Pihe and hand-woven Kite.

The exhibition does more than showcase the talent of Ōpōtiki, it is also a fundraiser for Te Tāhuhu ō te Rangi, the community space, research centre and library planned for the District.

Ōpōtiki District Council Planning and Regulatory Manager, Barbara Dempsey has been helping with the fundraising efforts and explained that the exhibition was a great opportunity to join forces with Studio One Toi Tū to bring the best of Ōpōtiki art to the streets of Auckland.

“The redevelopment of the library has been is a long standing aspiration of the Ōpōtiki community as the current library is bursting at the seams and does not meet the need of the community nor does it comply with the Earthquake Prone Building standards.

“This opportunity to display incredible Ōpōtiki art in Auckland was a two-fold win for the project; supporting Ōpōtiki artists and raising awareness and funds for the new facility,” Ms Dempsey said.

The first of the art is starting to arrive and there is growing excitement as invitations are sent and preparations made.

Echo Janman, Facility Manager at Studio One Toi Tū said that it was exciting to be part of an exhibition that is at the heart of a community.

“The preparation for an exhibition is exciting every time, but in this case there is an extra buzz as we get a real sense of the broad community support for this project. Great art and great outcomes for our people make this an exciting exhibition to be part of,” Mrs Janman said.

The exhibition is open from 27th July until 18 August 2016
