Are you a potential Mayor or Councillor?

Palmerston North City Council is running a series of seminars to assist potential candidates prior to Local Government Elections in October this year.

The Council will be seeking nominations for a Mayor and fifteen Councillors.

The seminars are to be held on Wednesday 29th June at 7pm and Thursday 14th July at 7pm at the Council Chamber, Civic Administration Building in The Square.

There will also be information available at each seminar on Horizons Regional Council and MidCentral District Health Board elections.

If you would like to take an active part in how the city functions by representing the people of the City, the nominations of candidates open on Friday 15th July.

For prospective candidates a completed nomination form and two nominators will be required. A candidate profile statement of 150 words should also be submitted and must advise whether or not a candidate’s principal place of residence is in the local government area for which the candidate seeks election. Include your policies and intentions if elected.

Electoral Officer, Dr John Annabell, said there the two seminars for prospective candidates that will provide an introduction to the Council and give an outline of the electoral process.

Dr Annabell also said that prospective candidates are welcome to attend any public Council or committee meetings between now and early October.

The Mayor and Councillors set the policy direction of the Council, monitor the performance of the Council, represent the interests of the district and employ the Chief Executive.

A deposit of $200.00 (incl. GST) will also be required.

Nominations close at 12.00 noon on Friday 12 August and should be either posted to the Electoral Officer or handed in at the Customer Service Centre, Civic Administration Building to be received by 12.00 noon on the 12th.
