Vote for the new Sumner library and museum name
Vote for the new Sumner library, community centre and museum name
The community still has two weeks to vote for
one of five possible names for the new Sumner library,
community centre and museum.
Christchurch City Council received 175 suggestions from the public in a competition run from 23 May – 12 June 2016. A panel have sorted through the entries and selected five finalists, which can be voted on by the public until Sunday 3 July at www.yourvoice.ccc.govt.nz/sumnercentre
“There were some clear favourites and common themes amongst the entries, ranging from environmental, historical, cultural and bilingual to functional names,” says Hagley–Ferrymead Councillor Paul Lonsdale.
The names that will be voted on
by the public are:
· Matuku Takotako: Sumner
Centre
· Sumner Community Centre, Library and Museum
· Tuawera: Sumner Centre
· The Cornerstone
· Surfers Peak
“We are looking for a name that captures the essence of the Sumner community. The shortlisted Te Reo names reflect Sumner’s historical Māori links with some really nice meanings behind them, while others draw inspiration from the coastal landscape,” Cr Lonsdale says “The combined facility will become an important gathering place for the community for years to come, so having a say in what we name it is a nice opportunity to make a permanent contribution to the community.”
The winning name will be announced in July, when the results will go to the Hagley–Ferrymead Community Board for the final decision. The person, or people, whose suggestion get the most votes will receive $50 credit at Christchurch City Libraries.
Construction of the two-storey, 1300-square metre building on the corner of Wakefield and Nayland streets is due to begin in August and the facility is expected to open mid–2017.
The centre will incorporate a library, community centre and museum. The library, community office, display area and library courtyard will be situated on the ground floor with the rest of the community functions, hall, kitchen and museum space on the first floor.
