Councillors Set to Pocket Significant Pay Rises
Rewarding Failure? Councillors Set to Pocket Significant Pay Rises
17 JUNE 2016
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Auckland Ratepayers’ Alliance is slamming the Remuneration Authority’s indication that Auckland’s Councillors look set for a near 20% pay rise in the next council term. The Authority has approved a 1.5% increase, but said a much larger increase was needed to reflect the earnings of the private sector.
The decision follows yesterday’s release of research showing only 15% of Aucklanders are satisfied with the Council, and only 17% saying that they trusted the Council.
Carmel Claridge, Spokesperson for the Ratepayers’ Alliance, says:
“We welcome the comments of Auckland Council candidate Bill Ralston, that being elected to Council is a public service, as well as his commitment not to accept any pay hike.”
“It is an insult to Aucklanders who are suffering from enormous rates increases, and are not getting the services they deserve. In what other organisation would you give a pay rise to people who have only made 15% of their clients happy?”
“We call on other candidates to join Mr Ralston and pledge to reject Councillor pay rises in the next council term.”
