APO Brings Classical Greats to the North Shore
Two giants of classical music are the centrepiece of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s (APO) inaugural mainstage series concert at Takapuna’s Bruce Mason Centre on Wednesday 13 July.
Beethoven and Brahms is the third concert in the ever-popular Bayleys Great Classics series and marks the first time APO has extended a mainstage series to the North Shore. APO Music Director Giordano Bellincampi leads the orchestra for this concert and Australian-Korean violinist Suyeon Kang performs Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, considered one of the most beloved pieces of music composed for the instrument.
Suyeon Kang won the Michael Hill International Violin Competition (MHIVC) last year and her performance with the APO wraps up her MHIVC Winner’s Tour, which also includes a Queenstown recital and a performance tour of the country with Chamber Music New Zealand and pianist Stephen De Pledge, including recitals in Queenstown, Sydney and Melbourne.
The concert begins with Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture, one of Weber’s most popular orchestral works, drawn from his evocative and colourful opera of the same name. Following Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, Brahms’ Third Symphony brings the concert to an emphatic and lively close.
Beethoven and Brahms is the first of two Bayleys Great Classics concerts to be performed at the Bruce Mason Centre in 2016, with another concert, ‘Classical Favourites’, scheduled for 12 October. APO Chief Executive Barbara Glaser says the orchestra is delighted to bring the popular series to the North Shore. “Bayleys Great Classics is a very special series which celebrates some of the best-loved works in orchestral music,” Glaser says. “With the addition of two concerts at the Bruce Mason Centre, North Shore audiences can enjoy a superb evening of orchestral music and outstanding artistry right on their doorstep.”
