Councillor Denise Krum was delighted
to be a part of the dawn planting ceremony that is returning
a tree to One Tree Hill in the ward which she represents
(Maungakiekie-Tamaki). The Auckland councillor says,
‘It’s wonderful that the iconic One Tree Hill can once
again have a native tree. The replanting is a momentous
occasion for all involved and a true celebration for
Auckland.’
The councillor for Maungakiekie-Tamaki, along with Mayor Len Brown and Local Government Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga together planted a pohutukawa tree in this morning’s dawn ceremony with hundreds of Aucklanders present. Krum said later in her speech “I have walked here, run here, pushed a pram here, and got elected here. All three of my children were born in National Women’s hospital at the foot of this spectacular place. Nothing compares to place and it’s a treasured gift for this city."
Background:
Representatives from Ngā Mana
Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority,
Auckland Council and local community planted a small grove
with a total of nine young tōtara and pohutukawa where the
previous single Monterey Pine stood. All specimens were
grown from parent trees at Maungakiekie and will be
protected by a band of native shrubs, including kiekie to
provide shelter on the exposed tihi. The hope is that after
a decade, a single pohutukawa or tōtara will remain
standing on the
tihi.
