Para Kore Programme to tackle marae waste in Ruapehu

“I’m very excited to have started this new journey to tackle waste with the Para Kore programme in the Ruapehu rohe” says newly appointed waste advisor Amoa Crossan.

Amoa Crossan (Ngāti Tūwharetoa and Uenuku), who lives in Raetihi with her partner Te Maire Hawira and their three daughters, will support marae and community organisations in waste minimisation.

“Para Kore is all about Zero Waste. Through recycling and composting at the marae, we can ensure that not everything ends up in landfill. We all know that landfills are expensive to operate and are environmentally problematic. As Māori, we have a strong connection with the whenua, with Papatūānuku, and it is important that we look after our environment. Over 100 marae across Aotearoa have already implemented the Para Kore programme” says Amoa.

The Para Kore programme is rolled out in partnership with Ngāti Rangi and the Ruapehu District Council.

“We are partnering with Para Kore and Ruapehu District Council to deliver a Marae Para Kore programme in our rohe and with neighbouring marae because we believe this initiative will help not only marae and the whānau that maintain them, but the community as a whole” says Andy Gowland-Douglas, Pou Arahi (Chief Executive) for Ngāti Rangi Trust.
