Time to Stand Up, Stand Out

An online clip of three talented singers is again showing the world what young Aucklanders can do.

The video captures students PJ Tele’a, Junior Soqeta and Irene Folau’s performance of the Bill Withers classic ‘Lean On Me’ at the 2015 heats for regional talent competition, Stand Up, Stand Out (SUSO).

Recent reposting of the song has brought total views close to 1.5 million as registrations open for this year’s competition.

It sums up what makes SUSO special.

“People are probably used to watching reality TV talent shows. Stand Up, Stand Out is every bit as competitive. But, for us, the final is just the beginning. We pride ourselves on the on-going support offered to individuals and groups who are interested in pursuing a future in entertainment,” says programme leader, Gene Rivers.

This includes industry mentoring, master classes, the chance to record original material for a compilation release and presenting potential pathways to national programmes, Song Hubs (APRA), Play It Strange and NZ On Air grants.

Last year’s top performers appeared at various Auckland Council events and festivals including Urbanesia, Matariki and the Waitangi Day Family Celebrations in Hayman Park in February.

“South Auckland might be the home of Stand Up, Stand Out but it was great to see nine new schools from across the region taking part last time. It grows every year and now is a truly region-wide event attracting entrants from Kaipara to Tūākau,” says Arts, Culture and Events committee chair, CouncillorAlf Filipaina

Stand Up, Stand Out is an event delivered by Auckland Council as part of a regional arts and culture programme for youth.

Schools are invited to register individuals and groups in the competition by 30 June.
