Motorists urged to carry chains State Highway 73, Otira/ Arthurs Pass, this weekend – snow forecast Canterbury
The NZ Transport Agency is asking motorists to take extra care on the alpine passes this weekend, in particularly Arthurs Pass, with snow forecast from early on Saturday.
Snow is also forecast for the South Canterbury high country and northern ranges of Otago.
The Transport Agency’s Canterbury/West Coast Journey Manager Lee Wright says people need to prepare well if they are making a long journey.
Carrying chains and knowing how to fit them is important for anyone travelling between Canterbury and the West Coast or the South Canterbury high country, she says.
“Checking tyres and brakes, windscreen wipers, lights and steering system is essential,” she says.
“Before you leave, check the weather forecast and consider if you really need to travel when snow and ice are forecast. A longer route may be a safer route.”
