John Palino calls on Auckland Transport to
reprioritise transport for new housing
"Auckland Transport's announcement today that it will start consultation on a cycleway from Parnell to the city is great news for a small number of residents in central Auckland wanting more options, but what about those residents who don't have basic housing because core infrastructure is not in place?
"Transport authorities are already spending $50 million on a cycleway from Glen Innes to the city - how many houses will that get built?
"We must rethink where we're spending our money in the short term because we've got problems far bigger than not enough travel options for those in central Auckland.
"There is a very weak justification for investing in liveable infrastructure when we're not building enough homes because basic infrastructure is not in place.
"The council should be deferring the nice-to-haves and investing in basic roads and public transport so we can get houses built.
"It's the right thing to do.
"Council needs to take a really close look at itself and its decisions because it is not serving the interests of Auckland," said Palino.
