MidCentral DHB helping new parents with baby talk

Baby talk is often cute and entertaining, but have you ever seen it be informative and helpful?
That’s the aim of Babble: Baby talk from MidCentral DHB, a new app designed by Palmerston North Hospital’s Neonatal Unit to provide information and guidance for parents with a baby in the unit.
The app, which has its official launch at 10.30am on Wednesday 18 May, is full of information about everything from how to breastfeed, through to details about the Neonatal Unit itself. It also gives parents the ability to journal their time in the unit, with notes and photos; all of which can be shared with family members around the world.
The app is the brainchild of MidCentral DHB paediatrician, Dr Nathalie de Vries who won a highly commended award in MidCentral DHB’s annual innovation competition.
Dr de Vries is thrilled with how the app has turned out, and is putting emphasis on the teamwork that has gone into it.
She said: “The app has been a lot of work, but I really believe it will have a lot of benefits for parents in the unit. Our Neonatal Unit focuses on partnering with parents to help them take charge of caring for their child during a very important time in the newborn’s life, and this app will really help with that. The information in the app will not only help them during their time with us, but also once they have left the unit.
“This couldn’t have become a reality without the involvement of the neonatal team, parents, and many others. It has been thanks to their time, effort, and willingness to volunteer that we have made it to the point where the app is ready to go.”
A lot of local talent and innovation has been poured into the development of the app, with the wonderful photos throughout the app being taken by UCOL student, Meli Berends, the software development was carried out by local firm Nodero, and the design work came from Blacksheep Design.
