Christchurch Airport Marathon route confirmed
The route for the Christchurch Airport Marathon on Queen's Birthday Weekend (5 June) has been confirmed.
The route will take marathon runners from the start line in Cathedral Square around Hagley Park before heading east along the Avon River and finally returning back to the city centre finish line.
Last year traffic congestion around the marathon caused significant delays to travel around Christchurch. Changes have been made this year which are aimed at reducing delays and improving access.
Christchurch Transport Operations Centre Manager Ryan Cooney says, "We are asking people to change their travel plans where possible and avoid unnecessary car travel across the city on the day. The city centre will be open for business, but it is essential to plan your travel carefully. It will not be possible to cross the marathon route by car so walking, cycling, or parking and then walking will be the best ways to access the city."
"This is a big event in the city so we expect that congestion will be significant if travel advice is not heeded."
What you need to know:
• Traffic restrictions will be in place from 6am until 2pm
• Cars will not be able to cross the marathon course but pedestrians can
• Buses will run but may experience delays
More information about transport changes during the marathon and updates as the event takes place are available from the Transport for Christchurch website.
