Advisory: CPAG Post Budget Breakfast event series
Each year Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG) provides child-focused analysis and commentary of the budget. The aim is to provide an accessible and affordable avenue for the community to come together and hear about how the budget affects children and young people, especially our most vulnerable who live in poverty. This year events will be held in seven main centres, in collaboration with sponsors and associates - Whangarei, Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Hamilton, Christchurch (May 27) and Nelson Tasman (June 1).

Dr Shamubeel Eaqub: Shamubeel is an experienced economist who makes economics easy, he is also an author, media commentator and a thought-leading public speaker.He has over a decade of experience as an economist in Wellington, Melbourne and Auckland in leading international banks and consultancy. He is on various boards of charities and commercial firms.
Associate Professor Toeolesulusulu Damon Salesa: Toeolesulusulu Damon Salesa is a prize-winning scholar who specialises in the study of colonialism, empire, government and race. He is currently Associate Professor of Pacific Studies at the Centre for Pacific Studies, University of Auckland, where he is also head of Pacific Studies, Director of the New Zealand institute for Pacific Research and Co-Head of Te Wananga o Waipapa.
Alan Johnson: CPAG's housing expert. Alan currently works as a social policy analyst for The Salvation Army's Social Policy & Parliamentary Unit. He is author of A Mountain All Can Climb which is The Salvation Army's 2015 State of the Nation report. He has also held positions as a trustee of the Auckland Community Housing Trust and as the Chair of Community Housing Aotearoa.

Guest Speakers
Max Rashbrooke: Max is an author, academic and journalist. He is a Research Associate for the Institute for Governance and Policy Studies. His recent work has focused on income and wealth inequality. He is the editor of Inequality: A New Zealand Crisis, published in 2013, and author of The Inequality Debate: an Introduction, a short guide to income inequality in New Zealand.
Dr Jess Berentson-Shaw: Jess is a researcher and science communicator working at the Morgan Foundation. Her recent research has focused on innovative solutions to improving outcomes for children in poverty (due to be published this year). Jess refers to herself as an 'evidence scientist and agitator' as she has spent most of her post PhD research career advocating for science based public policy.
Morgan Godfery: Morgan is a writer and trade unionist based in Wellington. He is the editor of The Interregnum, published by Bridget Williams Books in 2016, and his writing regularly appears in The Guardian, Fairfax and Overland Literary Journal. He also regularly appears on radio and television as a political commentator and has authored several academic chapters. He graduated in law from Victoria University in 2015.

Paul Dalziel: Paul is the Deputy Director of the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit at Lincoln University. Paul has more than 25 years experience in researching themes on New Zealand economic and social policy. We are grateful for Paul's insights at his third post-budget breakfast in Christchurch.
Rosee Hodgson: Rosee completed her Master's in Public Health in 2015, focusing on the perceptions of neighbourhood that children develop in a socioeconomically deprived area of Christchurch. In particular, the thesis examined the construction of identity for these children, and the implications of stigma and networks. Rosee is now working part time as the Solutions to Child Poverty Advocate for the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch.
Stephanie Cowan: A member of CPAG since its beginning, Stephanie Cowan is founding director of Change for our Children an independent and self-funded social enterprise based in Christchurch. She has more than 25 years of experience in designing and implementing change programmes at regional, national and international levels Also featuring short presentations from several students at Ara.

Associate Professor Mike O'Brien: CPAG's social security spokesperson. Mike is an Associate Professor at the School of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work at the University of Auckland and earlier been the Head of the School of Social and Cultural Studies at Massey University.
Dr Nevil Pierse: Deputy Director of He Kainga Oranga/Housing and Health Research Programme. Nevil was previously a project manager and statistician for the Housing Heating and Health Study and is currently working on the Home Injury Prevention Intervention study, looking at the effectiveness of an intervention of basic injury hazards in 1000 homes. His research goal is to best describe the relationship between environment and health, especially in the home and community setting.

Professor Martin Thrupp: Martin is the head of Te Whiringa School of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Waikato. Martin's main research interests are in education policy and its lived effects across New Zealand's socially diverse and unequal communities. Martin is also on the working group for Poverty Action Waikato and will be reflecting on their latest report Neglect and Nurture by Dr Anna Casey-Cox and Dr Rose Black.
